Football is now securing a place among more traditional schoolgirl sports, according to reports in The Telegraph 3rd October 2012.
The worldwide growth in the popularity of women’s football had, until recently, not been reflected in the independent schools sector, where traditional female sports hold sway. But now Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham Ladies’ College and St Paul’s Girls’ School are among several prestigious girls’ schools that are taking their soccer seriously. The profile of women’s football in general is increasing in the wake of the recent Women’s World Cup and the introduction of the new Women’s Super League.
This greater interest has led to a demand from girls in independent schools to play football, which the schools are now meeting. Dr Susannah Abbott, of Harrow School, chairman of the Girls’ section of the Independent Schools Football Association, insists that changes are afoot on several levels.
