The latest figures revealed that the top twenty schools that attained the highest proportion of A and A* grades at GCSE were all single-sex. Thirteen of these were Girls’ Schools Association schools.

Of the other schools featured in the top twenty, four were single sex boys’ independent schools and three were maintained girls’ grammar schools.

A level

At A level, single-sex schools continued to dominate, with seventeen of the top twenty schools that attained the highest proportion of A and B grades single-sex schools.

Fourteen of the schools featured in the top twenty were independent girls’ schools, two maintained boys’ grammar schools, one an independent boys’ school, and two maintained co-ed grammar schools.

Jill Berry, President of the Girls’ Schools Association and Head of Dame Alice Harpur School in Bedford said, ‘The results are truly inspiring. They clearly demonstrate the value and importance of specialised, single-sex education.

‘The latest figures are testament to the hard work, talent and dedication of our girls, teachers and all staff who work at GSA schools across the country. Our schools encourage girls to fulfil their academic potential and to make the most of their individual talents. These latest figures show the strength and significance of the education we offer.’

Last week the Girls’ Schools Association launched a new website mydaughter.co.uk to share the GSA’s expertise and experience in educating and caring for girls. The site features a section on ‘Educating your daughter’ which includes tips for parents on education choices and development stages from under 5 through to 18 plus, case studies written by parents and students, independent research reports and a schools’ directory.
